VICTORIA

The snow is barely falling this morning and after I get the office cleaned up from our group breakfast, I find myself leaning against the wall, looking out the window as Shane and Colton shovel more snow from the sidewalks. Colt is keeping his head down, working hard, but Shane drops his shovel and grabs a handful of snow. I watch as he forms a ball and sends it flying at Colt’s back. It pops off his coat, busting itself apart, bits of snow fluttering back to the ground. Colt turns around and Shane dies laughing.

“Oh, that’s it,” Colt says, quickly grabbing snow and flinging it at Shane.

I laugh as I watch the snowball fight take off. They’re playing like it’s a game of war, each of them picking a hiding spot, Shane behind a tree and Colt behind my Jeep. They take turns flinging the snowballs at one another, each of them laughing and talking smack when the other throws and misses. Seeing them interact like this makes me wonder if I should come clean to Colt about Shane.

I’ve noticed the way Colton looks at Shane and I can see all the questions he has regarding him and my pregnancy. If nothing else, I’m sure he’s done the math in his head. The two men look so much alike, it’s impossible not to see the resemblance. I have a feeling that Colt knows the truth, he just hasn’t asked the question yet. It makes me wonder why he hasn’t asked if he’s Shane’s father. Is he afraid of the answer, or is he just trying not to push me? Not knowing is eating me alive and I feel as if I can’t make a decision until I know for sure one way or another.

Telling Shane is a whole different problem. When he was little, he would ask about his dad and I would tell him that he was just a boyfriend I had in college, but that it didn’t work out. I told him the truth and told him that his father didn’t even know about him. As a kid, he didn’t seem to mind much. He was cared for, loved, and happy so it didn’t seem like he even noticed an absence. Now though, I feel like a lot of Shane’s questions lately are him piecing things together. It’s only a matter of time before both men are asking me for some answers.

I manage to keep myself busy for the day by cooking for our guests and cleaning up the messes in between meals. It’s late by the time I’m done cleaning up dinner and prepping for tomorrow’s breakfast. Shane crashed out hours ago and Colt seems to be keeping himself occupied in the living room. I start the dishwasher and pour myself a glass of wine as I wipe down the counters for the night. I’m surprised when Colt wraps his arms around my waist, lowering his lips to my neck.

“Mmmm, what’s got you in such a good mood?” I ask, pressing my back against his chest.
